Selenite

Selenite Crystals Australia

Selenite is one of the most widely used crystals for energy cleansing, protection and recharging other crystals. Unlike most crystals, Selenite does not need to be cleansed itself and is considered a self-cleansing stone that continuously maintains its own energy. Our Selenite range includes charging plates, tealight candle holders, hearts, beams, twisted massage wands and the Crystal Box Set, all sourced from Morocco and hand selected for quality.

What Is Selenite?

Selenite is a variety of gypsum crystal that forms in long, fibrous blades with a soft white or translucent pearlescent appearance. It gets its name from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, a reference to its glowing, moonlike quality when light passes through it. Most of the world's Selenite used in crystal products comes from Morocco, where it is found in large natural deposits and hand harvested by local miners.

Selenite is notably soft compared to most crystals, sitting at just 2 on the Mohs hardness scale. This means it can be scratched by a fingernail and should be kept away from water, which can dissolve the surface over time. Despite its physical softness, Selenite is considered one of the most energetically powerful crystals in spiritual and healing traditions.

Why Selenite Is Different From Other Crystals

Most crystals are said to absorb negative energy over time and need to be regularly cleansed. Selenite is one of the few crystals that is considered self-cleansing, meaning it does not accumulate stagnant energy and does not need to be cleansed by other methods. This unique property makes it one of the most practical crystals for daily use and is the reason it is so widely used to cleanse and recharge other crystals.

Placing your crystals on a Selenite charging plate overnight is one of the most popular and low effort methods of crystal maintenance used by collectors and practitioners alike. It works with all crystal types including Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Clear Quartz, Labradorite and virtually any other stone in your collection.

How to Use Selenite

Selenite Charging Plate — place your other crystals on the plate and leave them overnight. The Selenite is said to draw out any accumulated energy and restore the crystals to a cleansed, neutral state. Our Selenite Charging Plate with Sunflower Pattern is one of the most popular pieces in our collection and makes a beautiful display surface for a crystal arrangement.

Selenite Tealight Candle Holder — place a standard tealight candle inside the holder. When the candle is lit the Selenite glows from within, creating a warm, soft light that is unlike any other candle holder material. Our Selenite Tealight Candle Holder is a popular gift and a practical home decor piece.

Selenite Beam — the Selenite Beam is a long flat wand of natural Selenite, used to sweep energy around the body or a space, to place alongside other crystals, or simply as a display piece on a shelf or altar. At 16cm it is a versatile size that fits easily in a hand or on a windowsill.

Selenite Hearts — our Selenite hearts are available in two sizes. The Selenite Heart and Selenite Heart Large are popular for holding during meditation, placing on a bedside table, or gifting as a symbol of care and calm. They are among our most affordable Selenite pieces and are frequently bought as a starter crystal for beginners.

Selenite Twisted Massage Wand — the Selenite Twisted Massage Wand has a naturally twisted form that makes it distinctive among wands. It is used for body massage, energy scanning and directing during crystal healing practice, and as a display piece in its own right.

Crystal Box Set including Selenite — our Crystal Box Set of 5 includes a Selenite piece alongside Amethyst, Citrine, Clear Quartz and Rose Quartz. It is one of our most popular gift options as it introduces the recipient to five of the most widely used and complementary crystals in one beautifully presented set.

Where to Place Selenite in Your Home

Selenite is traditionally placed at the entrance to a home to act as an energetic barrier, on windowsills to allow light to pass through its crystalline surface, on bedside tables to support calm sleep, and on shelves or mantles as a display piece. The tealight candle holder works particularly well in living rooms and dining spaces where the candlelight effect adds warmth to the atmosphere.

A Selenite charging plate placed in a central location in your home with your collection of crystals arranged on it creates both a beautiful visual display and a practical ongoing cleansing station for your crystals.

How to Care for Selenite

Because Selenite is water soluble, it should never be cleansed with water or left in a damp environment. Even high humidity can gradually affect the surface finish of polished Selenite over time. Store it in a dry location away from bathrooms and outdoor areas.

Selenite does not need energetic cleansing as it is self-cleansing. To physically clean the surface, use a soft dry cloth only. Avoid any liquid cleaners. Handle with care as it can chip or scratch if dropped or knocked against harder surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions About Selenite

Does Selenite need to be cleansed?

No. Selenite is considered a self-cleansing crystal that does not absorb or hold negative energy. Unlike most other crystals it does not need to be regularly cleansed using water, moonlight or sound methods. This is one of the properties that makes it so widely recommended for cleansing and recharging other crystals.

Can Selenite go in water?

No. Selenite is water soluble and should never be placed in water. Even prolonged exposure to humidity can affect the surface over time. Never use water to clean Selenite. Use a soft dry cloth only.

Can Selenite charge other crystals?

Yes. Selenite charging plates are specifically used to cleanse and recharge other crystals. Simply place your crystals on the Selenite plate and leave them for several hours or overnight. This works with virtually all crystal types.

Is Selenite the same as Satin Spar?

Technically no, though the terms are often used interchangeably in the crystal market. Both are varieties of gypsum. Selenite is the transparent crystalline form while Satin Spar is the fibrous silky form most commonly used in charging plates and wands. Most products sold as Selenite in Australia including our range are technically Satin Spar, though the properties and uses are considered the same.

What crystals work well with Selenite?

Selenite works well with virtually all crystals as a cleansing and charging tool. As a display combination it pairs beautifully with Amethyst for a calming purple and white pairing, Rose Quartz for a soft pink and white combination, and Clear Quartz for an all white high clarity arrangement.

Is Selenite good for beginners?

Yes. Selenite is one of the most recommended starter crystals because of its versatility, its self-cleansing property and its relatively low price point. A Selenite heart or beam is a practical and meaningful first crystal, and a Selenite charging plate becomes increasingly useful as a collection grows. Our Crystal Box Set of 5 includes Selenite alongside four other popular starter crystals.

Is Selenite suitable as a gift?

Yes. The Selenite Tealight Candle Holder is one of our most gifted products because it doubles as both a functional home accessory and a meaningful crystal piece. Selenite hearts are popular as affordable and beautifully presented gifts. For a more comprehensive gift the Crystal Box Set including Selenite is a popular choice for birthdays, housewarmings and wellness occasions.
